Roly Horrey
Roly Horrey (Rowland George Horrey) b.7th March 1943 Bishop Aukland, County Durham.
Played for Bishop Auckland 1961-63, Ferryhill Athletic 1963, Blackburn Rovers 1963-65, York City 1966-67, Cambridge United 1968-72, Chelmsford City 1972.
Roly turned professional in 1963 with Blackburn Rovers and joined York City two years later for a fee of £4,000. After 77 Football League appearances and 9 goals Roly was spotted by Cambridge United and joined the U’s in the summer of 1968.
As an out and out right winger Roly played 96 first team matches over the next two seasons and scored 24 goals. His tireless running combined with no little skill, speed and accurate crosses helped set up many a goal for the U’s strike partnership of Bill Cassidy and Tony Butcher. Even from his wide playing position Roly still managed to score the winning goal on no fewer than seven occasions and was virtually an ever present in United’s last two Southern League Championship season’s which were the foundation of the club gaining entry into the Football League.
After entry into the league Roly stayed with United for two more seasons, making 46 appearances and scoring 12 goals in all competitions. Yet again, as was his habit, getting the winning goal on two occasions.
