Derrick Christie
He was a cobbler and a bit posh at times but those who have seen him in the Habbin in recent times know where ‘Dazzling’ Derrick’s heart really lies.
Christie joined the second division voyage in November 1978, joining John Docherty’s team, and debuted against the O’s at the Abbey. By the end of that season he had contributed three goals but who counted the assists in those days? No statto then. Over his time at the Abbey the likes of Biley, Mayo, Garner, Reilly and Alan Taylor, to name but a few, would vouch for the constant supply line from the right wing.
As we contemplate this weekend’s fixture it’s funny that Sunderland was a bit of a favourite of our Derrick’s. Arguably his most memorable U’s goal was an 88th minute equaliser (we had been 3-1 down) at the Abbey in January 1980. Bear in mind he had opened his account for the U’s with a brace at Roker Park just a month or so after his debut.
147 outings for the U’s and 20 goals, ‘dazzling’ by smile and his wing play mastery. Legend
