Good afternoon everybody and particularly our visitors from the old saddle-making town of Walsall. Been a while I suspect since a saddle was assembled in or anywhere near the town, the leather symbol disappeared from the club’s badge a long while ago but, thankfully, the nickname remains. And if my memory serves me correctly I was once served the finest pint of Mild ever imbibed in that town, again I suspect if it’s still around then it is not what it was. I stand to be corrected though..
Starting to pen these notes before the Scunny game I was hoping that “we are still top of the league then” would be a given but not so. The mini Tuesday curse has struck again. I hear sales of worry beads have increased again in Barnwell, Romsey and outlying villages. Fear not, and stay together in endeavour.
The old Cut Throat Lane meander today reveals an interesting fixture played out on 6 March 1990 and the ‘Stones from Kent were in town. Little did we know it but this was actually the footballing equivalent of “hors d'oeuvres” and the main course and dessert were to follow in May in the form of the renownedly ‘dreaded’ promotion playoffs, and the dessert didn’t even take place in Maidstone! We won the March portion 2-0 in front of 4,464(oh for a crowd) with goals from Dublin, both in the first half. Suite(sic). That evening’s programme is included today for your delectation, note the cover price of 80p, that’s well over £3 in today’s money. A quick glance at the line-ups reveals a certain Steve Butler(bless) and Ken Charlery (non-bless) in the Kent side’s forward line. Having drawn away in the previous September and knocked them out of the League Cup over two legs early doors we have never lost against Maidstone……..that is an indelible fact as that dire Sunday afternoon in the FA Cup back in December 1986 has been wiped from all statistics and records relating in any way to CUFC. In fact it was probably Carlisle or Colchester involved.
In other news, on this day in 1836 the Battle of the Alamo took place. Let’s hope Davy Crockett is wearing a Saddlers’ shirt this afternoon!
Enjoy the game and stay safe.
Bye for now,
