100 Years of Coconuts was saddened to hear of the death, peacefully on June 2 at the age of 89, of former Cambridge United full back John 'Johnny' Strachan.
Johnny, a left back who was described by player-manager Bert Johnson as 'a very useful club man', joined the U's from Haverhill Rovers in September 1955, when he was 26.
While serving mainly as a cover player and as a regular in the reserve team, he also made 50 appearances in all first-team competitions before joining Ely City in 1958, as Johnson made room in his squad for younger blood.
He leaves a widow, Janet, daughter Jenny, stepson Steven, stepdaughter Susan, son-in-law Chris, grandchildren Lee and Carly and great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 12 noon on Thursday, June 22 in Cambridge City Crematorium's West Chapel. The family requests that bright clothing be worn. Family flowers only are requested; donations, payable to
Alzheimer's Research UK, may be sent to Richard Stebbings Funeral Service, Kendal House, Cambridge Road, Impington CB24 9YS.
